How can I tell if my "Teenage son/daughter" is having an Eating Disorder?

Teenage years can be difficult for both boys and girls. Their appearance, body shape, and body image become one of their concerns. Teen boys tend to exercise more and lift weight to shape up their bodies and to build muscles. On the other hand, teen girls emphasis on following certain diets to lose weight and get rid of some extra kilos.

Most of teens have unrealistic image about the way their body should look. Both boys and girls might engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as excessive exercise, self-induced vomiting, diuretics and other medications abuse.

If you suspect that your teen or child has an eating disorder, here are some signs to watch for

  • Wearing bulky clothing to hide weight loss
  • Weight loss (10% or more) without medical reason 
  • Purging behaviors
  • Fear of gaining weight
  • Restrictive eating patterns such as skipping meals or eliminating major food groups
  • Prefer to eat alone
  • Low self esteem
  • Absence of menstrual cycle or delay puberty, for young women

Eating disorder can cause extreme undernourishment. Eating disorder in extreme cases can lead to death or suicidal thoughts. The best treatment for eating disorder combines medical, psychological, nutrition coaching. If you think that your teen son/ daughter might have an eating disorder, consult a physician as soon as possible.
